You’re trying to write for too many people
🚨 You’re trying to write for too many people 🚨
Paradoxically, you will reach more people by writing for fewer.
Why it matters: Generic writing that attempts to appeal to everyone can’t match the quality of writing that targets a specific niche. When you write for everyone, you write for no one.

Startups face a similar problem
- There’s a paradox in the startup world. The more focused your business — the narrower your ideal customer — the more likely it is that you will find a customer who's willing to pay you.
- When you have focus, your business improves because you’re able to give that customer exactly what they want.
- But there’s a catch — in our global world, there will be many more customers just like the niche one you've identified.
Apply it to writing
- Your writing should be as focused as possible. It should attempt to address one specific person.
- At the top of your page, write a description of the single individual you are trying to reach. Give them a name, describe what they do, identify what they care about.
- If your reader feels like the writing is being specifically tailored to them — they will care more.
Paradoxically, by focusing your writing, you will reach more people.
