How BanklessDAO Uses Discord: Workshop
This session will cover introductory Discord topics to address the many questions received in the DAO Discord from people new to the platform and the DAO.
Target Audience
People who would like to better understand use of the Discord platform and the information contained in it to maximise their ability to contribute to the DAO.
Resources / Logistics
- The ‘ask a mentor’ voice channel - can we do channel setting as everyone muted?
- Dedicated text channel for the workshop - attendees will practice posting, replying, tipping, creating threads etc. This can also act as the place for attendees to post their questions - that way there is a log and any questions not answered in the session can be followed up.
- Pre and post poll set up in the text channel - to assess confidence before and after the session.
- Dummy calendar event for attendees to find in the Calendar channel and respond to.
- Possible small tip (from program budget) to registered attendees - see this idea.
Learning Objectives
Mention that it’s a good idea to write down questions of vocab words.
After completing this session, learners will be able to:
- Explain the working relationship between the Bankless DAO and Bankless LLC
- Understand the key differences between Guest pass access and Member access
- Complete the BanklessDAO First Quest
- Know where to find key information about the DAO
- Action the selection of at least one Guild tag and/or Project tag, and be able to see these on their own and others’ profile
- Use the Calendar channel and Sesh bot to RSVP to events, set reminders in Discord and/or add the event to a Google Calendar
- Communicate in Discord by replying, reacting, tagging other users, accessing or creating threads or pinned posts, join voice channels, use server DMs, and identifying spam
- How to tip with Tip bot (Collab.Land)
Content Outline (talking points for presenter to cover)
The difference between BanklessDAO and Bankless LLC
- Bankless LLC is a media company, formed to promote the bankless mission. It has grown the movement through memes and media, including a popular newsletter and podcast.Bankless LLC is now a fully operational media studio with revenue, expenses, and employees.
- BanklessDAO launched on May 4th, 2021 (Announcing Bankless DAO).The DAO’s mission is to coordinate and propagate bankless media, culture, and education. It’s goal is to drive adoption and awareness of truly bankless money systems like Ethereum, DeFi, and Bitcoin.
- Though both share the mission, the Bankless DAO is independent of Bankless LLC. Bankless LLC plans to continue to grow the bankless movement, but now as one of many participants in the larger Bankless DAO.1
Guest pass access vs Member access
- Anyone is welcome to join the BanklessDAO Discord
- On joining the Discord, you should either:
OR
#first-quest
#first quest complete
Introduce yourself into the #get-involved
Request a Guest Pass so that you can participate without the required amount of BANK.
- People with the 35K BANK are made Level 1 Members of the DAO Discord once BANK is confirmed. Level 2 Contributor status can then be reached through nomination by others.
- Guest Passes expire after 7 days, and can only be renewed by a Level 2 Contributor. Automation in development.
- There are certain channels in the Discord that only Level 1 members and Level 2 Contributors can access. There are some additional discussions and member perks made available in these channels.
- Anyone with BANK in their wallet can help guide the future of Bankless DAO by voting on proposals on Snapshot (ensure the wallet is connected). Here’s the official Snapshot page https://snapshot.org/#/banklessvault.eth where proposals are open for three days of voting.
- For voting on Snapshot, Every BANK token you hold counts for one vote.
Complete the BanklessDAO First Quest
- Whether you are a Guest Pass holder or a new Level 1 Member, start with the Discord channel labelled #first-quests-welcome
- First Quests were created to give you a short and effective onboarding experience that will introduce you to Bankless, the tools we use to manage our community, and how to get involved. All new members start with these First Quests.
- This process will take you through a series of channels labelled: first-quests-welcome, first-quests-membership, first-quests-firehose, first-quests-scholar, first-quests-guest-pass, and finally, first-quest.There is information and a task in each of these channels which will provide you with important information.
At this point we will want to make sure that all students have completed first quest and gotten their guest pass or started the verification process for Bank.
Where to find key information
- Once you have completed First Quest, those channels will disappear from view.
- There are some Discord channels you can always return to which have the information you’ll need:
- dao-start-here
- faq
- Another useful channel is the defipedia-bot channel where you can ask the bot for a definition.
- Away from Discord, there is the BanklessDAO wiki which is maintained on a separate platform called Notion.so
- This is where you’ll find meeting notes, draft proposals, information about projects, and more detail about the processes of the DAO.
- There are How To Guides, a getting started cheat sheet, and links to each Guild. If you’re not sure what a guild is, we’re about to cover that in the next section. Projects and Discord Channels show descriptions of other important channels outside of the Guild Talent Pools.
- If you’re still stuck after reading these channels and the wiki, you can always ask a question in the Discord ask-a-mentor channel or the #know-stupid-questions channel where there are plenty of people available to help.
Guild select
- Guilds are talent pools to develop and coordinate specialized skill sets into a single location.
- Finding a guild that interests you and getting involved in discussions is the best way to contribute to the DAO’s work.
- There are 13 guilds at the moment - something for everyone.
- It’s fine to join more than one guild if you want to, but try not to take on too much at once.
- To select a guild, go to the guild-select channel and select the reaction emoji that represents the one you want. You’ll see these underneath the list, with numbers next to them already - this is from the people who have already reacted.
- You can always come back here later and deselect if you change your mind, or select additional guilds if you’re ready to contribute more.
- When you join a guild, head to the ‘#start-here’ channel to find key information including a contact person who can get you started.
Project select
- Right underneath the guild-select channel, there is a project-select channel.
- Projects often involve more than one guild, which is why they sit outside the guild structure.
- To select a project, select the reaction emoji that represents the one you want.
Why select Guilds and/or Projects?
- Selecting these (otherwise known as adding the role tag) means that you will be able to see all of the Discord channels within a particular guild or project. Without the tag, you will only see each Guild’s start-here channel.
- Another reason is so that you are notified about messages relevant for the whole guild.
- And the last reason, as mentioned before, is that this is the way to get involved, meet people, and start to share your valuable contributions with the DAO.
At this point all students should have a guild and or project selected.
Use of the Calendar channel / Sesh bot / How to RSVP / Add to Google Calendar
Prior to the event a Workshop Test Event will be created in sesh bot for the students to interact with.
- Once you have joined a guild, you will want to know when the meetings are and hopefully make time to attend these.
- Meetings are added to a calendar and only sometimes appear in the relevant discussion channel. To see all the events at once so that you can plan your time and not miss a notification, use the calendar channel.
- There are two ways that information appears in the calendar channel: Individual event listings, and a list of all events.
- Individual event listings will display in your local time zone. To RSVP, select the ‘checkmark (tick) reaction emoji. This will add you to the attendee list and will also send you a direct message (DM) from the sesh bot with the details. More on that in a little while.
- The sesh bot also periodically displays a full event listing in the calendar channel. The list displays the events in the UTC timezone. You can click or tap an individual event to see the details and this will then display in your time zone like we just saw.
- A DM from the sesh bot will arrive for each event you RSVP to.
- In your DMs, you can use the RSVP confirmation to set a Discord reminder notification. To do this, select the clock reaction emoji underneath the event details.
- This will generate options for the reminder and you can react with one or more selections.
- If you would prefer to add the event to your Google Calendar, you can do this by clicking on the [+] next to the event name, in the individual event listing in the Calendar channel.
Other Discord features
- Replying, reacting, tagging other users
- threads, pinned posts, voice channels
- server DMs, spam need screenshot of how to disable server dms by default
- Invisible, status
Tip bot (Collab.Land)
- For those that already have a wallet, after connecting your wallet with the collab.land site, you can use the !join command in #join to verify your Bank holdings in your wallet and be granted level 1 membership status.
