[PROPOSAL] PM Guild Active Members
During Season 5 and 6, the PM Guild introduced the concept of Active Membership, wherein individuals who put effort in the pursuit of the guild’s mission would be rewarded with governance rights and tool access. This proposal seeks to further refine active membership in S7 based on a chat in one of our PM Guild Weekly Tactical Meetings. It seeks to amend the following PM Guild Governance docs:
Why Have Active Membership Status?
The PM Guild is a permissionless organization (i.e. anyone can join), but there are certain decisions (i.e. direction, how we work) that we would like to restrict to people who have some sort of stake in the future of the guild. Put another way: those who contribute to the guild’s future should have a say in how the guild runs today. We call these people active members.
Who Should Have Active Membership Status?
In Season 5, we experimented with using meeting attendance OR kanban tasks as criteria for active membership. Those who had attended at least 3 of the last 6 meetings or had completed 2 kanban tasks during the season were considered active members.
- Unfortunately, we found that individuals were attending the weekly guild meeting, but not contributing in any way (i.e. not adding to discussion, not participating in any guild works). These members also ended up having the highest Coordinape allocations, which meant guild funds were being allocated to non-contributors.
In Season 6, we started to calculate membership monthly, and restricted active membership to those who completed one kanban task in the previous month as well as elected role holders and multisigners.
- Unfortunately, we found that some members who had contributed during the first two months of the season were ineligible for standing for Guild Roles at the end of the season (because their membership had lapsed)
- We also reported our active membership to the Grants Committee as a seasonal aggregate (i.e. we counted active members for all 3 months of the season as “Seasonally active”)
In Season 7, we have ideated calculating membership both monthly and seasonally (i.e. If you do 1 kanban task a month, you are a monthly-active member (MAM) . If you are active in any month of the season, you are seasonally-active member (SAM). If you are an elected role-holder or multisigner, you are both MAM and SAM.
Some issues
- it’s HARD to reconcile kanban and bounties on BB
- should people from outside guilds become active members for doing bounties for us?
- consensus: yess…..?
- MAM and SAM are confusing
- Maybe we need to SIMPLIFY our system?
- reduce to just SAM
- Maybe we can just discuss who is an active member?
- could create a biased process
- What about large tasks versus small tasks?
- large tasks can be broken down into smaller ones
Proposal:
- reduce to only seasonally-active member calculation (to be done by talent+guild coordinator)
- kanban tasks OR bounties (tasks) are counted (i.e. both will be taken into account, no reconciliation needs to be done)
- average of 1 task per 4 weeks (to account for changing season lengths)
- so for a 13 week season - you need to do 3 tasks to stay an active member
ACTION: links to put this up on the #pm-governance as a vote
Who Should Calculate Active Membership?
It is the Guild Coordinator’s Responsibilities to calculate and report our seasonally active members to the DAO at large.
