The Three Types of Rounds ⚙️
The Three Types of Rounds: Main, Ecosystem, and Cause

Main Round
Will likely be decoupled from “side rounds” (ecosystem and cause rounds) for GR15. To be confirmed by Grant Ops/FDD collaborative effort no later than Jul 29.
The main round is for broad support of open source software development in the greater ETH/ERC-20 ecosystem. The primary goal of the open source software should be to create good for the benefit of society at large rather than a select group of people. This is intended for early stage projects. Grantee applicants should not have raised any VC funding and should not have a native token associated with their project.

Ecosystem Rounds
Ecosystem Rounds are rounds dedicated to specific ecosystems/protocols within the existing space. They typically have a large following/network and can bring their own matching pool for the round. The goal is to support open source technology that furthers the development of the particular ecosystem (e.g. Protocol Labs/Filecoin, Polygon, etc). Ecosystem partners that create a round reserve the right to set their own eligibility, as outlined in their particular Round Brief.

Cause Rounds
Cause Rounds are thematically-specific rounds that focus heavily on social good. Many eligible projects may be focused on software development while others may be boots-on-the-ground projects IRL. Cause rounds from the past include Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI); Climate; and Crypto Advocacy. The donors for the matching pool for the specific cause round work with the Cause Round Lead (Currently Ben West) to outline the eligibility in the Round Briefs (hyperlink cause round briefs here, to come). Criteria vary widely based on specific round.
