Eective communication: Non-Violent Vs Violent Communication . Communication is how people pass across information or connect. It is more accurately defined as one person sending their emotions, thoughts, or messages through verbal and non-verbal means to another person who receives and understands them. As such, communication cannot take place if the other person cannot understand the message being passed across. While communication can be verbal or non-verbal, it can also be non-violent. Non-violent involves passing across information peacefully, while Violent passes it through physical assault. In our world, violent communication usually occurs one way or another. It could be with limbs, sticks, stones, or crudely made weaponry. In recent years, however, with the mass production of guns and funding for war equipment, Violent communication is far more advanced and dangerous than ever. Classic examples are the unending war between the USA and Iraq, Israel and Palestine, Russia and Ukraine, and the Ethiopian civil war. Need I mention the First World War, which began as a result of Violent communication? A Serbian nationalist killed the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand. History claims he was killed simply because he was perceived as a threat to Serbia's independence. Unfortunately, the assassination had an adverse effect. Besides the war, Austria-Hungary inflicted harsh demands Serbia had to comply with, making them worse. They probably would have been better off receiving the archduke and finding ways to obtain his favour. Violent communication isn't always fighting, though. It can also be practiced in cases such as corporal punishment, primarily used to discipline children and delinquents and set an example to might-be offenders. It could also be a means to assert dominance, especially in gangs and cults. Violent communication could also be verbal abuse, such as insults or degradation. However, Non-violent communication is primarily peaceful, respectful, controlled, and calm. It could be physical such as occasions of grand romantic gestures or a gift given in kindness. It could also be just two or more people talking to each other. It could be a mother's actions to show she loves her child. It could be an argument debated by several people in front of an audience. It could also be in peace treaties and agreements between nations. In essence, both parties express their feelings and needs openly and honestly, and they work together to find a solution that meets their needs. Both forms of communication yield results, positive and/or harmful. Violence leads to estrangement, emotional trauma, and the destruction of relationships. It could also escalate to unrequited violence and destroy lives and properties. It might seem practical sometimes, but it is not. It just inflicts pain on the recipient. Non-violent communication, however, focuses on understanding the needs and feelings of all parties involved and finding solutions that meet everyone's needs. Nonviolent communication can lead to more
productive and positive outcomes in interpersonal interactions and can help to build stronger, more meaningful relationships. It can also help to reduce conflicts and improve overall communication. In general, violent communication is destructive and is not always an effective way to resolve conflicts or communicate with others.
