Lesson 1
Goals:
- Broad introduction on what we are going to do and why we are doing this way (Centralization issues with Trust, censorship, transparency
- How blockchain solves this issues (broad, not technical)
- Familiarize students with the discussion platform and the governance process
- Sign up to the discussion platform
- How to write a proposal
- Start brainstorming proposals
Lesson plan:
BRENT 0-15 Warm up activities: what is the meaning of the word governance for you?
Definitions:
The process of making and enforcing decisions within an organization or society (Wikipedia)
The way that organizations or countries are managed at the highest level, and the systems for doing this. (Cambridge Dictionary)
Originating from the Latin verb gubernare and ancient Greek word kubernaein, governance means ‘to steer’. Literally, it means ‘to control, guide or manipulate’.
Gubernum (lat): rudder
Possible:
- Talk about self-governance
- Talk about environments in which we are governed
- Talk about situations in which student had a say or didn’t have
PIERPAOLO 15-25 Do you remember what are we going to do from our last encounters?
Re-introduce the tool: a governance tool that students can use to organize themselves, brainstorm and discuss proposals, vote on them and submit them to the administration to have their voice heard. In the future, they might be able to use such platforms also to connect with students from other schools and raise funds to carry out their projects.
- The tool is made of:
- A discussion forum
- A governance platform
Possible questions:
- Have you ever participated in a discussion?
- Have you ever participated in a discussion on a forum? Which one?
- Have you ever voted? For what? How did that go?
BRENT 25-35 PROBLEM SOLVING: Let’s suppose we need to take a vote on whether remaining anonymous or not on a forum. How would you run that vote?
Highlight issues with centralized votes (create slides): trust in a central authority that could: censor some vote, prevent votes from being balloted, cheat
BRENT 35-45 SOLUTION. Introduction of decentralization, through blockchain you can have a system that:
- Doesn’t need a trusted central entity because information is distributed among many nodes, each of them have an exact copy of the state of the affairs. Removing the middle man
- Can’t be censored by: anyone (proof of work)
- Runs in a fully transparent way: everyone can control the state of the affairs at any time
- We’ll explain in details how this works during your next lesson
BRENT 45-50 Brainstorm: what uses of a decentralized system/ledger/database can you imagine? What would you like to decentralize?
PIERPAOLO 50-75 Introducing DAOs
- We are going to create a DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization
- An horizontal way to organize communities
- It’s unstoppable cause it runs on blockchain
- Some use cases of a DAO:
- Constitution DAO
- UkraineDAO
- KrausHaus
- Gitcoin
- VitaDAO
- KlimaDAO
- Bored Yacht Club
- Merit Circle
- Lido Finance
- Decentraland
We want to decentralize schools:
- How can schools be decentralized?
BRENT 75-95 Introducing the discussion platform
- Overview of the discussion platform
- Brief description of the governance process (proposal ideation, discussion, selection, vote, eventual problems)
- Brief description of the voting platform: they will be connected through a wallet, which will represent their Web3 identity. We will vote through the system 1 wallet 1 person, but many other systems are possible
- Signin in the discussion platform
- LINK: granadahills.theschoodao.org
BRENT 95-105 How to write a proposal
- How to write a proposal (create some examples)
- Title
- Background
- Rationale
- Finance
- Risks and Mitigation
- Supporters
PIERPAOLO 95-105 Guided practice with the discussion platform
- Students will have the chance to brainstorm mock proposals, comment, give likes, report proposals. We will reset everything after the training.
PIERPAOLO ENDING THE LESSON
