PG Funding Ops 14/10
Minutes taken by QZ, ask if you need clarifications
Context: PG WS Overview
Action items:
- Break down rounds (climate, longevity, advocacy) into more tactical tasks
- education content on pathways or onboarding
- structure grants for more clarity
- take a look at the run books and see how to merge them with the current PG WS notion
- compile 'how to get funders to fund' resources. blog posts, deck, case study

Updates
- integrate PG gardeners into fundraising champion
- treasury mostly Elliot and Shreyas so adding it to the notion
- add Annika to coordinators to oversee ops
- side rounds is working title, might change
- rounds open to but currently have the most support, seem thematically relevant to the conversations we have in the space now
- Climate: ClimaDAO (Xavier) and Regen. have a working group of 6-7 members who are trying to figure out how to create a wBTC that also offsets carbon cost but also generally in involved in the climate movement
- Advocacy: mostly by connor selasie(?) just wrote a post with freedom of the press foundation. already grantees on the platform but not getting a lot of support because not getting enough publicity when comparing to big eth names
Clarification and comments:
Annika - how do we coordinate the rounds?
uniswap round very straight forward, just need uniswap. but now these side rounds are mostly being led by certain major funders whose DAO's mission is aligned.. eg. VitaDAO does not necessarily fund projects that are within VitaDAO but they have the context on this and they've been putting together a list. They'll probably be leaders of the round too.
Annika - funders generally speaking will still be very crypto focus but the grantees could be anything the projects want to fund even if blockchain agnostic?
absolutely. will hope that its largely blockchain agnostic. eg did a COVID-19 run and most of them were non crypto projects but were still interested in access with crypto. need to make sure that the group can accept crypto or they could be onboarded to something like the giving block.
Lani - is advocacy for blockchain development or what is it advocating for?
a lot is in transit now. right now its mainly applies to groups of projects focused on regulatory reform and activism on the tech front. tech in journalism etc a lot of them are privacy related now. we don't want it to be a restriction. Electronic Frontier Foundation is an example. focused on privacy but also keeping tech responsible.
Lani - add some human or societal flourishing to onboard non crypto native projects to meet essential human need. what's the most efficient pathway to onboard them and they have no web3 experience
trying to take the structure we have now and see how we can help adapt this. need to outline a group of projects that would make sense and have a place to keep track of the companies coming in
Kris - don't think can onboard a lot of them now because bandwidth. it just ends up in a lot of sidetracking to trying to onboard them. Giveth has become a tax register to a lot of organisations now. would be good to focus a bit.
if we have someone willing to onboard to having crypto. most don't accept crypto generally but they could rely on a fiscal sponsor to provide this. don't spend too much time convincing people to individually take crypto.
Lani - creating a very simple pathway to entry, can fill out the form. give them a starter document. pathways to dip your toes in.
Annika - might need to break down the Advocacy road to be more specific
as of now its mostly tech activism and crypto activism
connor's existing work creating a funding pool to support this. a lot of conversations but a lot is being taken over by Eth related community projects. Context: Crypto endangered - https://twitter.com/RaineyReitman/status/1446599351195734022
Alisha - gitcoin round needs to be very strong in order to branch out. right now room not tidy and want to save the world.
goal right now for main categories is to disband the main categories within web3 and have that be its own broad pool and set a max limit to projects raising, might appoint people to top up for some rounds. currently split on internal product side and DAO side. Todo - call to structure grants categories for more clarity. start a thread in Discord to figure this out.
Vishnu - own the longevity round
Annika - go into the specific steps of the rounds and then the tactical next steps
Kyle - working on run books. how Gitcoin historically does rounds. like what are the touchpoints, grant eligibility policy, what type of marketing to do. dream is that GitcoinDAO build these really robust run books so folks in the DAO can take and execute this for themed round or side rounds successful. so next time we can hand off the run book so they could join the ecosystem and start running that. who might be interested in the ecosystems to lead the round and we can learn from how Gitcoin is doing it.
Lani - yes on real world social good projects like food and housing, already organically connecting with some of these organisations. Wendy doesn't seem 100% on board yet with some concerns on environment on using ethereum. HerstoryDAO. Web3 onboarding for a high school program in LA. Nick Adams doing a custom build for NFT collection, splits contract to execute on top of custom zora build.
Ryan - Karl Floersch from Optimism, building retroactive public goods funding tools for them. probably max out capacity on that already. would like to look at the run books. 2 major things to work on is helping them get... projects now come from panel of experts and they want to decentralise and distribute that. the way we're putting conditions on what's eligible would like to see and use this as guideline. runbook already in Notion.
Scott - anyone interested in being public goods gardener or fundraising champion, this will be a big piece in the grant beyond the library
Kyle - suggestion to use feedback framework. do, try, consider feedback. mostly use try, and consider feedback. Consider - the gitcoin grants home is like going to combine with PG WS. would love to work on how to make the transition happen. Sharing on GTC grants home. Would be good to work on how people are using Notion and working effectively. Notion1337, Linh, Lani. Kyle will pull together a side time to focus on this.
Ryan - Where is the guidelines for partners for qualifying projects for grants?
right now figuring how to combine these things. uniswap is a good example of one that qualifies strongly based on track record and value alignment.
Ryan - any educational institutions to this work we can explore? or accelerators?
as of now currently no.
Lani > Annika > Kyle- when we start talking to protocols that they want to participate what are some tips for advice to have these conversations and invite them into these projects as funders
blog post on what are Gitcoin grants, how quadratic funding works, being a matching partner,
if community well established enough, question becomes how do we explain side rounds for them
another is a case study like a uniswap case study so folks can see what uniswap's results have been like.
deck that explains what a funder's league is and why contributing to public goods is good.
