Biz-Dev/D2D discussion #0
About the meeting
Goal : To know each other, discuss the Biz-Dev goal and D2D.
Listed items are collected from recent discussions in the Biz-Dev channel. Feel free to add a new item if there is anything you want to discuss but not covered.
Biz-Dev is not a functional guild yet. There are many things to discuss, and they are all very important to the future work. Therefore, we may not be able to reach conclusions and consensus in just one meeting. Hope that this meeting can help more people participate and speak out their opinions, which will help to make the guild move.
Agenda
- Biz-Dev purpose & goals - From Mugi, discussed by many people in the channel.
- Economic incentives for BizDev labor - From Mugi , Coach also mentioned about this several times back to weeks and months ago
- Communication and operating standards - From Mugi, innov8tor3 has some ideas about operation and get thing documented which might related to this topic
- DAO Advisor idea : To help other organization build DAO - From innov8tor3
- Documenter idea - From innov8tor3
- How to actually do BD work at beginning: is Build partnership proactively with other DAO and Crypto teams a good strategy - From Chao, many people have their own understanding about what D2D should be and it has been discussed continuously in the channel
Meeting note
At the beginning there is a brief self-introduction from each one.
Mungi – Business experience in building identity platforms with data from big players such as Equifax. New to DAO and willing to help the guild move to the next stage.
Innov8tor3 – Experience in coding, business analysis (Data design, process design and documentation) and project management. Would like to help the guild by understanding the requirements here, documenting those and designing a process flow.
Frog – Start DAO’s work from launch, focus on governance and coordination, help other people take their ideas from idea to action.
Coach- involved in Bankless DAO from ground zero, helped with coordination, looking to build things and sell them, a major contributor to Biz-dev guild in the past few months.
Chao – Experience in both traditional IT business and Crypto business, managing business development and investment. Willing to contribute to DAO’s Biz-Dev work.
Early story about biz-dev guild:
The intention was to be a business consulting agency , helping traditional business owners to move on chain. But we are not structured and not ready for this. So we put this idea back. Then start looking into involving other DAO and build relationships with them. This initiative wants to make revenue generating to the guild, But those projects were compartmentalized and put in places where it makes more sense since Biz-dev has no solution and does not act like an organization but just 1 or 2 individual contributors.
Then there is a vicious circle, no solution means no revenue and also makes it hard to make a proposal so that Biz-Dev can become a real guild and get support from the treasury fund. This makes people leave and make Biz-dev even harder to act like an organization.
Background about Bankless approach and Season 1.
There are 3 major approaches for spreading the bankless way of life through media, culture and education. There has been a lot of initiative focused around that.
Season 1’s priority is to have a bankless academy project up and running, it is also a test to see how we can operate and coordinate together. How do guilds operate internally, how do guilds organize, how do guilds interact with one another. How do things get funding? We have passed the beginning phases of those problems but those are not mature and still under exploration.
The idea about what Biz-Dev can take:
There are 3 angels that Biz-Dev can take.
- Guilds are gonna start offering services to external organizations. The Writer guild has already done that. Right now each guild is doing their own account management, an example is there are two contact points from Writer Guilds and Design Writer to Argent. In future, there are gonna to be need of coordination layer for account management
- Use our Crypto experience, knowledge and brand recognition to help tridational companies on whatever they need. One direction is sort of providing white label products to other companies to bring DAO mechanisms to them.
- D2D relationship and finding opportunities there.
All of those ideas were intense and never got off the ground because we didn’t have the infrastructure and plans. The easiest way to get started might be to have Dao2Dao relationship , one idea is to create some type of ambassador program.
Dao2Dao relationship:
Coach has experience and a process he is using to get involved in other DAO and get social capital. Those will eventually help to build relationships between DAOs. Coach will probably share those later.
For the Dao2Dao relationship, there is no way to set a measurable goal at this moment. What we can do right now is create, build and nurture relationships with other DAO, get brand recognition for bankless. By doing this, we will know what services benefit them and come back and help design solutions which are needed by external organizations.
Biz-dev guild play as a function team across umbrella:
The original thought about guild is each guild is like a department, department work together and delivery thing together. In that case, Biz-Dev Guilds should not have their own solution, but play as a function team to help across the umbrella on whoever has BD needs. (or we can call this a solution for internal) This is not a consensus across the DAO but just a thought from Chao.
Right now, it is more like each guild is an individual business unit. Guilds come up with ideas, ideas grow to solution, then guilds sell solutions by themselves and deliver it to clients. Guilds are doing everything on their own organically.
Biz-Dev guild could be a function around the umbrella providing account management service internally when there are more projects and partnerships down the road.
We don’t have process setup, help collectively align and coordinate and build relationships. Those could be our focus points to work.
Economic incentive for Biz-dev labor:
Economic incentive is important for long term run. Properly align an incentive system to make sure biz-dev is delivering value for Bankless DAO.
People who help on biz-dev work can be considered as part of the ops guild right now, Biz-dev itself is not a guild and has nothing to compensate people. People who want to get compensation can join the ops guild and apply for it.
But Biz-Dev function is needed and should not always be under ops guild since it has a very differentiated mission from ops work.
Ops guild are producing a template that other guild can use. (is it the UBI program?)
Next call:
We are ok to make another call at the same time next week. But what we really should do is continue the discussion and make more alignment based on what we have and what we discussed. So let first continue the talk on the channel and then we decide if and when we need another call.
