DAO Permissions Based on Reputation and Competency
A weighted system that uses the inputs of various data elements to output a comprehensive score used to determine eligibility for membership, voting, leadership positions, compensation and more.
Summary
This is a request for research into the options for reputation and credential products. The GSE would like to investigate the integration of these tools, and we have arrived at the following requirements. This workgroup is responsible for finding a product that best satisfies the requirements.
Compensation
35,000 BANK
Background
Today, we make a lot of important decisions with limited perspective, knowledge, and understanding. With weighted voting, we make the assumption that those with the highest token balance have the DAOs best interest at heart. While this might be true based on the “skin in the game” argument, it is not certain. More importantly, influence via token weighted voting does not account for the individuals’ understanding of the impacts of their vote. “With great BANK balances comes great responsibility”. We need to introduce additional elements other than BANK balance to form a more accurate weighted vote.
A similar argument can be made for elected positions with influence and power. The Grants Committee is a body of elected members. This body has the power to approve or deny funding. While the entire community can vote for each member to hold this position, we are all voting with limited perspectives on the nominee's abilities to do an effective job. The same can be said for the GSE. Although, the GSE election process was much more involved and included a roundtable discussion during a community call which was a step in the right direction. In a traditional work environment, there is a small group of people who are tasked with identifying and selecting the best talent for various positions. The good thing about that is they have access to all the necessary information to make the best decision based on resumes, interviews, references, etc. In a decentralized world like BanklessDAO, we eliminate that hiring process and allow the community to vote based on merit. The problem with this model is not everyone in the community is aware of the nominees’ capabilities and competencies to make an educated vote. We need tools that help us to understand all the relevant skills people bring to the table to help us make better decisions.
Reputation and credentials can be used to help us determine membership levels, compensation, and possibly more.
Requirements
The reputation and/or credential tool chosen should satisfy the following requirements:
High priority
  • Measure on-chain, objective data including
    • Snapshot proposals voted on
    • How a particular address voted on a Snapshot proposal
    • BANK balance
    • BANK LP token balance
  • Measure off-chain, objective data including
    • Discourse activity
    • Discord activity
    • Coordinape
Medium priority
  • Integration with Sobol
    • This is to track leadership positions held
    • The alternative requirement is the ability to manually add this information
  • Integration with DAOdash
    • DAOdash currently measured discord and discourse data. Integration would satisfy part of the requirement to measure off-chain, objective data
  • Integration with off-chain, non-BanklessDAO tools like Github
    • Used to build a reputation for developers
    • Other tools for other skills should be considered as well
  • Weighted reputation based on the source of information and what it’s used for
    • For example, BANK balance might have a high weighted score for determining membership level, but past leadership positions held may have a higher weighted score when applying for Grants Committee or GSE.
Low priority
  • Ability to manually add more data points

I’ve already started this analysis with Orange Protocol, although I’m sure there is more that can be added. Orange Protocol provides the infrastructure for communities like BanklessDAO to create a reputation score for its members. It calculates reputation by using data elements from on-chain and off-chain sources like Discord activity, Snapshot, BANK balances, and more. We can then use these scores to determine membership levels, access to voting, eligibility for leadership positions, etc. I included a table HERE that highlights some of the data elements that can be used to configure a score. A checkmark means it is possible to use this information to create a score, and an X means it’s not. As far as I know, we can assign different elements specific weights. For example, maybe the number of Discord messages only has a 10% impact on an individual’s reputation score, but Snapshot activity has a 30% impact.
