Intro
- Paolo Ardoino is the Chief Technology Officer of Bitfinex. He has been on the show before but in a completely different capacity. Today’s episode is all about Bitfinex and the work they are doing towards financial freedom. Paolo joined Bitfinex early 2015 and now serves as CTO, developing & managing core parts of the Bitfinex backend. Paolo has been building valuable tools & infrastructure for financial innovation for the past 15 years.

- Bitfinex was founded in 2012 which makes you one of the earlier and perhaps OG exchanges. Currently there are over 500 exchanges to choose from; according to coinmarketcap, Bitfinex ranks 8th based on traffic, liquidity, trading volumes, and overall confidence. There is $53,531,849 trading volume in the past 24hours, 455 markets and 194 coins on your roster. In my humblest of opinions, these numbers are quite impressive, how has Bitfinex managed to stand out of the unnecessarily large pool of exchanges? What sets you apart? ✅
- Your mission, according to your website, is Inspired by the Bitcoin ethos, you say that you're devoted to building state-of-the-art technology that enables people to transact and interact freely and effortlessly around the world. Do you believe you are still aligned towards this mission? And you do think you have made good progress so far or there is still quite a way to go? ✅
- In November of 2022, you launched your Freedom Manifesto in El Salvador. Can you tell us a bit about this manifesto?

- What is Bitfinex’s opinion on crypto, bitcoin and financial freedom in Africa today, is there an optimistic outlook on what is possible for the continent?
- Promoting financial freedom in emerging markets requires a level of understanding in terms of what one’s options are and amongst other things, what the purpose of our financial systems and its tools actually is. ✅
- Could you share what financial freedom means to you both as an individual and as Bitfinex? ✅
- In your Freedom Manifesto you mention that “We believe education is the key to create the momentum for positive societal change”, realistically, how do you disseminate this education? ✅
- Your culture is one that came out of the birth of the Bitcoin revolution and we believe that peer-to-peer networks and cryptography form the basis of a freer, more open society and represent the most durable and combat-proven technologies available.
- If 2022 taught us anything, it taught us that verifying your trust in an exchange should be a regular occurrence and not just a nice to have, as such, there have been more and more exchanges challenged to make their reserves data available which you have done so kudos to you! Are there other specific elements on security that you have made available for Bitfinex users and the general public? ✅
- Not your keys, not your crypto: where does ownership as an extra layer of security fit in for Bitfinex? ✅
- What are you looking forward to the most in the next 2 quarters and of course this current one within the defi scene? ✅
