  • Tether is a cryptocurrency stablecoin pegged to the US dollar and according to its website, backed 100% by Tether’s reserves. It is owned by iFinex, which is a Hong Kong registered company that also owns the crypto exchange BitFinex.
  • Launched in 2014 as RealCoin, and later rebranded as Tether in November 2014, Tether has been trading as of February 2015.
  • It has so far racked up $25.6B in volume and has a market cap of around $66.49B. It is also the 3rd largest cryptocurrency after Bitcoin and Ethereum.
