Gitcoin Community Gathering
Mission: Building an IRL foundation to recognize the value of coordination that inspires communities to fund their shared needs and learn about the mechanisms that enable it
Â
Event Title: Gitcoin Community Gathering
Event Dates: Monday 27 February - Wednesday 1 March (pre-Schelling Point and EthDenver)
Format: in-person
Location: Chautauqua
Â
Event Description:
We’re hosting an IRL retreat before the Schelling Point Conference and EthDenver for core community members who have supported Gitcoin historically, been champions of public goods for the good of our broader community, and leaders who want to commit to funding and fostering projects in their community with positive sum games with a priority around protocol partners. We rarely get the core Schelling Point / Gitcoin community together in an intentional way IRL and we’re invested in making this a special experience.
Â
This will be more than a co-working or networking event. In fact, we’d love people to leave the idea of networking at the door before entering the experience. Instead, we will create a safe space that encourages exploration of play, curiosity, connection, creativity and collaboration around our collective intelligence. A shared experience with others that are energized and inspired to help lead our broader community in recognizing the power and impact of fostering community, shared resources and funding / building public goods for a better future.
Â
The buy-in to the retreat and call to action following the three days will be to support our Gitcoin Protocol launch in three key ways.
- Ticket costs will loop the community into our GTC token holder network that help steward our Gitcoin program, vote on what public goods we want to prioritize supporting and encourage others in the broader community to participate.
- A portion of ticket costs will be contributed to the pool that funds our Gitcoin Program launch
- We can encourage all participants and key sponsors from the retreat to create a grants program on the protocol that celebrates attendees and the broader community and helps fund additional impactful community events. The round could run every 6 months and attendees can create grants or bring in other grantees who are interested in foster the broader community in a truly decentralized way.
Â
This would be an invitation only ticketed event, with the hope that all guests have been carefully vetted and are excited to contribute to the larger vision of building a better future through sharing resources within community and fostering shared community needs.
Â
We are cognizant that this is an exclusive event and intentionally so. However, we hope this is one of many and that attendees will grow more affinity to our purpose and carry these learnings as leaders of the vision into their day-to-day experiences and communities. We recognize that building and fostering this affinity and community takes many different forms, and a lot of hard work. Historically, we’ve done this online through public forums and discords, smaller telegram chats and DMs, and working hard to make these different channels more engaging and enriching. IRL we have Schelling Point as a way we bring as many people together as we can, smaller informal gatherings and this retreat will be one more way we want to thank and foster the community we deeply appreciate.
Â
Event Programming:
A structured program over the course of 3 days / 2 nights that begins by immediately creating the space for people to connect with one another, speak to those they know and with strangers all in a way that forces deeper conversations / interactions with a lasting “call to action” that connects everyone through funding this communities shared needs + intentional smaller touch points after.
The first day will be arrivals, gift bags with a note about the intentions of the 3 days, the broader call to action and an invitation to be as present as possible during our time together (even encouraging no phones in public spaces). We’ll start the programming that evening with an opening connection exercise (likely by a facilitator). The idea here is to invite everyone to fully internalize the value of taking this time to be together and how much value they bring as everyone there will be chosen for a reason and plays an integral part in to this community. And remind them of the opportunity for all of us to rally our collective intelligence around our shared needs for a larger impact through the work we’re all doing. This will set the tone for the retreat and will be followed by less structured/ free flow space for people to interact for the rest of the evening.
Â
The second day together will be a mix of programming to encourage connection with self and with one another, a mix of movement to open up and deeper conversations / workshops to facilitate a space for coordination of all the ideas people have been thinking through. We’ll curate groups ahead of time intentionally for parts of the day and allow for natural selection for others. The days programming will be a mix of world class external facilitation to create the container for the retreat and internal community members, where we can celebrate natural talents of those attending.
Â
The second night will be a celebration of everyone coming together and the last day a strong close out that sends people off to EthDenver feeling part of something authentic. With the sense that the collective coordination of the community will achieve a much larger impact together than any one individual in the group. With this, we’ll leave people with a “call to action” to both use Gitcoin’s protocols for their individual communities shared needs and create a grants protocol program in parallel to the launch event that captures the Schelling Point Retreat Community’s shared needs. This will be a way for this community to immediately engage with our protocol and have an IRL space to continue the connections from the retreat to make a larger impact.
