KPI Process

Starting in S4, Grants Committee started a Key-Performance Indicator (KPI) process for projects who receive funding. This process has the following goals:
  • To create a mechanism for Grants Committee to guide individual projects by participating in their goal-setting process
  • To build a barebones accountability framework by publicly displaying KPIs for projects that receive funding

Overview
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are metrics (numbers) that can be used to evaluate the health of a project. Just as your doctor can surmise your overall health by reading your blood pressure and pulse, the DAO can understand the health of a project based on tailored metrics for each project.
In Season 4, the Grants Committee started to collect metrics from every funded project and published them publicly (

) for accountability purposes. For any accepted grant, Grants Committee provides 50% of the grant amount up front, and 50% half a season later, provided KPIs are up-to-date. Projects who are up-to-date on reporting KPIs are also eligible for seasonal funding.
To ensure the process runs smoothly, Grants Committee assigns Reviewers to each funded project. You can see the list of projects and reviewers on our

Project List
. It is the reviewer’s job to solicit KPIs from projects, and it is the projects’ job to submit the KPIs as per the procedure below. Projects who do not submit KPIs are not eligible for grants.
Choosing KPIs
Projects propose 1-2 KPIs via their grant request forum posts. During the review process, Grants Committee members may request that projects change their KPIs (which the project may or may not accept). The Grants Committee then votes on whether or not to disburse grants given the KPIs that the project has submitted.
Some guidance on choosing KPIs:
  • They should be measurable TODAY
  • They should be understandable from an outside perspective; simpler metrics are usually more effective for early-stage projects.
  • They should be broad enough so as not limit your team’s agility and specific enough to show change over one season.
  • They should show progress on your impact (i.e. how you are pursuing the mission of BanklessDAO) and your self-sovereignty (i.e. how prepared you are to stand on your own).
