How to use Vaultwarden

Vaultwarden is our shared password manager - you can use it to store and share passwords amongst your team.

Definitions
Credential - a way to login to a website (i.e. username + password)
Organization - a team, aka your Guild or Project
Collection - a group of credentials (you can also think of it as a sub-team)
Getting Access to Vaultwarden
  1. On Discord, drop into the #notion-workstream in the OPS DEPARTMENT category and ask for access to Vaultwarden
  1. One of our Ops Department contributors will ask you to DM your email address
  1. You’ll get an email from Vaultwarden with the subject Join Bankless Ops Guild. (If not, check your spam folder).

  1. Click on Join Organization Now
  1. You’ll be taken to https://vault.banklesscard.xyz. If you’ve never signed in before, click Create Account and go through the steps to create an account.

  1. You’ll be taken back to the main screen. Log in using the email and password you set in the previous step
  1. You’ll be take to your My Vault screen. In the top-right is a prompt to verify your email address. Click the button to be sent a verification email

  1. Go back to your email and open the email with the subject: Verify Your Email, then click the Verify Email Address Now.

  1. After your email is verified, the Ops Department contributor from Step 2 above will add you to the organization they created for you
Giving Access to Vaultwarden
  1. Once you have access to VaultWarden, you can give access to your team by clicking on the team’s name in the ORGANIZATIONS section

  1. Then click on the Manage tab

  1. Click + Invite User on the top-right

  1. Enter their email and select the USER TYPE. You can find out more about user types here: https://bitwarden.com/help/user-types-access-control/
  1. Assign which Collections the user should have access to, then click Save
  1. Your teammate will now get an email from VaultWarden. Send them the instructions above under Getting Access to VaultWarden and have them follow Steps 3-8
  1. Your teammate should also send you their account fingerprint phrase by going to their account icon on the top-right and clicking on My Account. The fingerprint phrase will be in pink

  1. Log into VaultWarden, click on the organization, and then the Manage tab
  1. Click on the Accepted tab under People

  1. On the gear icon next to your teammate’s name, click Confirm

  1. Ensure that the fingerprint phrase is the same one they sent you in Step 7, and Confirm
Setting Up Vaultwarden on your Computer
Once you have access to VaultWarden, you can set it up to easily fill passwords in on your computer by installing a browser extension for your favourite browser (i.e. Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Edge, Safari)
Because VaultWarden is BitWarden-compatible, we will use the BitWarden Browser Extensions.
  1. Go to the BitWarden Downloads page, scoll down to the Web Browser section, and click the browser that you regularly use.

  1. You should be redirected to the page that prompts you to install the BitWarden browser extension. Click on “Add” button to install (example for Firefox below)

  1. Your browser will now download the extension as ask you to verify installation (example for Firefox below)

  1. The extension will be installed and redirect you to a welcome page, along with a login window. Click on the settings gear icon (⚙️)

  1. Set the Server URL to https://vault.banklesscard.xyz, then click Save

  1. Log in with the username and password you created in the previous sections, then click the x to dismiss the browser extension.
  1. To make it easy to use Vaultwarden, you may want to pin the extension to your browser

  1. Now when you go to a site for which you have shared passwords, the extension should show that passwords are stored and allow you to auto-fill (example for Tally.so below)
