Week of October 23 - Nov 15
Theme: Changes to the grants program
October 25:
Thread on Climate Program decentralizing:
Primary message: climate round is graduating
Secondary message: grants program is decentralizing
🌐Our Climate Solutions round is graduating to a Community Round in #GG19! As Gitcoin has evolved, our ecosystem has grown and nurtured a handful of sub communities. From DeSci to ReFi and everything in between, each community has its own set of distinct values and needs.
In order for these scaling communities to flourish, we believe that they cannot be held back by a centralized function like Gitcoin making decisions on their behalf. Rather, carving out their own spaces to discuss, decide and fund what matters to them is the way 🤝
Our goal at Gitcoin has always been to scale funding opportunities for web3 builders. Having our program and tech centralized and gated cannot achieve this. In our work to progressively decentralize, the Gitcoin Grants program is also becoming more and more modular alongside our tech ⛓️
Our cause and ecosystem rounds have become 'Community Rounds’ (prev. Featured rounds) that run alongside Gitcoin-run ‘Program Rounds’ (prev. Core Rounds) during our quarterly Gitcoin Grants activation. This Includes the Climate Program. This is a step toward ensuring that each program can operate with increased autonomy to meet their unique set of needs 🔆
We're committed to the success of each community round, and our hope is that each program feels the freedom to make its own decisions, including funding new initiatives, forming exciting partnerships and pushing new boundaries of what’s possible in web3 💪
We want to celebrate the Climate Solutions program graduating from a Program Round to a Community Round, run and organized by the newly launched Climate Coordination Network 🧩Make sure to follow for the alpha!

Every industry has its jargon 📚 Understanding the language is the first step to complete disambiguation -- and within Gitcoin there are A LOT of terms to keep track of -- so let's get into defining them as anticipation builds for #GG19 👇
🎯 Gitcoin Grants: Do we even need to tell you? Our flagship quarterly cycle that you all know and love is THE biggest QF program in town. It's powered by
@grantsstack
and protected by
@gitcoinpassport
. Gitcoin Grants helps to drive awareness and funding to both Program and Community Rounds.
💼 THE Program: The Gitcoin Grants flagship Program (the program for short) is the entity that operates and runs the flagship rounds that are managed by Gitcoin contributors. It serves to dogfood Gitcoin Grants, build an exemplary program and fund OSS Devs.
⚙️ Program Rounds: Rounds managed by the Grants Program Team (formerly PGF) within the Gitcoin Grants quarterly cycle, aligned with Gitcoin’s values and mission.
🌟 Community Rounds: Rounds run by community members on Grants Stack, often parallel with Gitcoin Grants Program Rounds or as standalone.
📚 A Program: A program is a set of rounds that are logically grouped together and named for what connects them.
🔄 Round: A time-delimited campaign on Gitcoin Grants Stack where funders, crowdfunders and grantees come together to contribute to Funding What Matters in their ecosystem.
👥 Round Operator: The driving force behind the success of a round, responsible for execution and management.
🤝 Credible Neutrality: A mechanism is credibly neutral if it does not discriminate for or against any specific people, treating everyone fairly, to the extent that it’s possible in today’s diverse and complicated world. ~ Vitalik Buterin
🌐 Progressive Decentralization: Decentralization is the transfer of control of an activity or organization to several local entities or authorities rather than one single one. Progressive decentralization is the philosophy of decentralization over time, in increments.

Gitcoin is embracing three key pillars in a transition from Gitcoin 1.0 => Gitcoin 2.0
1. A shift from a monolithic platform to a suite of modular protocols.
2. A spectrum of mechanisms like Quadratic Voting, Direct Grants, and Retroactive Public Goods Funding.
3. Extending support to any EVM-based community.
Let’s dive into the shift from 🏛️ Centralized monolith ➡️ Super cool, supermodular protocols 😎
Our old platform was a centralized monolith. Our new platform is a suite of decentralized protocols that are doing one thing + doing it well. If designed well, this ecosystem of tools are “supermodular” - meaning that they produce more value than the sum of their parts.
We find ourselves in a rapidly changing ecosystem, and Gitcoin is undergoing these transitions, meant to address the changing landscape.
Gitcoin's evolution from a company to a DAO is signposted with critical moments 🪧
Each juncture shaped the trajectory of Gitcoin 🌱
Highly specialized modules on Gitcoin 2.0 are paving the path forward 🐾
Gitcoin's growth mirrors nature's resilience. Read more on this from @owocki on the gov forum👇

Today we delve further into the Quadratic Lands to explore the Gitcoin 1.0 → 2.0 transition:
1. A shift from a monolithic platform to a suite of modular protocols.
2. A spectrum of mechanisms like Quadratic Voting, Direct Grants, and Retroactive Public Goods Funding.
3. Extending support to any EVM-based community.
Let’s double click on the marvel of many-to-many mechanisms ⛓️
Quadratic Funding (QF) is the first mechanism that Gitcoin mastered, not the last. We strive for variety in funding mechanisms much the same way we progressively decentralize 👾
Why is variety in funding a good thing? It allows for a plurality of outcomes. Quadratic Voting (QV), Direct Grants (DG), and RetroPGF are staples in the Gitcoin resource allocation kit 🧰
Gitcoin is expanding its toolbox to deliver a range of mechanisms to the world - QF, QV, Direct Grants, and much more to come.
Read more on how purpose specific mechanisms will each do 1 thing + do them well from @owocki on the gov forum👇

💡 Gitcoin is not just for Ethereum anymore. Gitcoin 2.0 is about leveling up and addressing the changing landscape within our ecosystem.
Let’s dive into: For Ethereum ➡️ For Any EVM-Based Community
The Ethereum ecosystem is evolving towards a modular architecture. And so are we.
Gitcoin Passport
Last cycle, Gitcoin’s sybil resistance tool suite provided sybil resistance to Gitcoin Grants (which serviced the Ethereum ecosystem). This cycle, Passport will provide sybil resistance to any EVM based community.
Expect a thriving ecosystem of Sybil-resistant dApps, with Passport leading the way.
Grants Stack / Allo
The problem that Gitcoin was solving with Gitcoin Grants 1.0 was helping the Ethereum ecosystem grow its ecosystem value.
In the next cycle, Gitcoin @grantsstack (powered by @alloprotocol) will allow any EVM-based community to grow its ecosystem value, and augment their existing grants program (or replace the software upon which it runs).

Nov 30th: Credible Neutrality
🚀 Navigating the Future with Credible Neutrality - At Gitcoin, we're committed to building a world where public goods funding is rooted in credible neutrality.
What does this mean? It's about creating mechanisms that are impartial and fair, treating everyone equally in our diverse, complex world 🌍
Why is this so vital? Public goods vary based on community values. In a polarized world, it's challenging to meet the needs of every memetic tribe simultaneously. Not every community may prioritize open-source software; some prefer local over digital public goods. Each tribe has its unique value set, shaping their public goods preference 🌟
Understanding this, Gitcoin evolved from a company to a DAO to an ecosystem, striving to scale a funding system for all humanity. This journey highlights the importance of community sovereignty in value decisions, advocating for protocols that don't discriminate or impose undue influence ✊
Gitcoin is now a DAO, encompassing:
• DAO contributors
• Neutral protocols as products
• Programs operating on these protocols
Our aim? To enable funding for public goods, irrespective of prevailing political winds. This means you can engage with the Gitcoin protocols regardless of your or others' political leanings. Fork the programs to support any cause - be it tech innovation, community projects, or niche interests 🎨

Dec 8th:
Gitcoin is taking an innovative leap towards evolving into Gitcoin 2.0, fueled by three key transformative pillars.
Gitcoin 1.0 was a centralized platform - a large, unmaintainable, and unforkable monolith. The introduction of Gitcoin 2.0 brings forward an ecosystem of modular protocols wherein each protocol does one specific task, and performs it exceptionally well.
Switch to an Array of Mechanisms: Quadratic Funding, although commendable for capital distribution, is not the only means to the end. Gitcoin's product suite is set to grow into a versatile toolbox of various capital allocation mechanisms. With Gitcoin's mechanisms, users can start with one capital allocation option and seamlessly switch to others as required, making Gitcoin an all-purpose, adaptable platform for capital distribution.
Expansion to All EVM Communities: Gitcoin is pushing its boundaries beyond Ethereum by extending its support to all EVM-based communities. For eg. Gitcoin's Sybil resistance tool, Gitcoin Passport, initially designed for Gitcoin Grants, is going mainstream, safeguarding any EVM-based community.
Embrace the transition to Gitcoin 2.0 as it reshapes the future of capital allocation.
For a deeper dive, read @owocki’s gov post: https://gov.gitcoin.co/t/3-transitions-from-gitcoin-1-0-gitcoin-2-0/16736
OPTION 2:
Gitcoin 2.0 is evolving through three transformative pillars. Firstly, it shifts from a centralized platform to a modular protocol ecosystem, where each protocol excels at a specific task, enhancing versatility and efficiency. Next, it diversifies from Quadratic Funding to include novel mechanisms like direct grants, creating a multifaceted toolbox for capital allocation. Lastly, it broadens its reach beyond Ethereum to all EVM-based communities, employing its Sybil-resistant Passport for a diverse range of applications. With its Grants Stack also empowering EVM communities, Gitcoin 2.0 is set to redefine the future of capital allocation.
Follow-up on pillar #1 on modularity (week of 11th Dec):
❓ What does it mean to transition from Gitcoin 1.0 ➡️ Gitcoin 2.0? Here's a deep dive into one of the three key pillars focusing on modularity 👇
➡️ Goodbye Monolith, Hello Modularity: Our previous platform was like a giant jigsaw puzzle that only fit together one way. Not anymore!
👉 Use @gitcoinpassport to protect your project from bots and bad actors, manage your grants program end-to-end using @grantsstack, and use @alloprotocol to efficiently and transparently allocate pooled capital
➡️ The Power of Supermodularity: Imagine a team where every new player amplifies everyone else's skills. That's our new ecosystem.
📃 For example, the project registry is a universal onchain registry for capital distribution through Allo. It aims to build project reputation and streamline capital allocation to impactful projects.
➡️ Unleashing Potential: With interfaces designed for the unexpected, our new platform is ready to connect with programs we haven’t even dreamed of yet.
🪪 For example, the ability to mint @gitcoinpassport on @optimismFND and @LineaBuild lays the groundwork for creating powerful and sophisticated reputation protocols.

Follow-up on pillar #2 on multiple mechanisms (week of 11th Dec):
Transitioning from Gitcoin 1.0 ➡️ 2.0, we're introducing a variety of capital allocation methods tailored for different stages of a community’s growth:
🚀 Direct Grants: Directly support builders with focused goals, boosting projects essential to your ecosystem.
🌟 Quadratic Funding (QF): A revolutionary crowd-funding method that magnifies your impact. Small or large donations from the community help decide fund allocation, empowering every voice.
🗳️ Quadratic Voting (QV): Make decisions transparently and inclusively with GitcoinVote tokens, fostering secure funding choices without direct donations.
🏅 Badgeholder-based Allocations: Empower a select group of badgeholders to guide fund distribution, retroactively rewarding curated projects with proven impact.
🔍 Each method has its unique strengths. By combining these diverse mechanisms, we're building more robust and resilient communities.
For a deeper dive, read @owocki’s gov post: https://gov.gitcoin.co/t/3-transitions-from-gitcoin-1-0-gitcoin-2-0/16736
Follow-up on pillar #3 on Ethereum -> EVM Based Communities (week of 11th Dec):
✨ With Gitcoin 2.0, we extend our reach and support to any EVM-based community 🚀
🛡️ Gitcoin Passport has been at the forefront of a self-reinforcing cycle to build trust in the Web3 space. By promoting the use of Gitcoin Passport for identity verification, we have seen a rise in secure and scam-resistant projects across EVM-based communities. This, in turn, has encouraged more users to engage in trust-verifying behaviors. 💪
🌐 Grants Stack is our game-changer for delivering Allo Protocol to everyone. Its no-code, easily forkable design is transforming the landscape of web3 grants. Its unique ability to cover various crowdfunding scenarios has rapidly propelled its adoption across various communities. 📈
🌀 Gitcoin Grants bootstrapped the flywheel behind this scalability. Over time, we’ve created momentum in collaboration with various EVM-based communities and partners, sparking exponential network effects. 💥
