Connecting in a Voice Channel

A quick recap: the channels with a speaker icon are voice channels.

Just click on the voice channel, and you will connect to it.

By default, you are on mute when you connect to a channel. If you want to speak, press the Mute/Unmute (red) button. If a red line is showing, you are on mute. If it does not show, then the audience can hear you.

If you want to disconnect from the voice channel, you can click on the disconnect button, which is the phone icon with the x (blue). 

The deafen/undeafen button with the headphone icon (yellow) will silence the conversation. A red line on it shows that you are deafened - if not, you are not deafened.

Screen share on Discord

Screen Share is a feature that you might have used in video conferencing platforms like Zoom. Discord is much more than just a messaging platform and features like these make it the go-to platform for building communities.

To share your screen, click on Screen button

A popup will open up. You will have two options: Applications & Screens. 

When you share an application, only that application will be visible to others. 

When you share your screen, your entire screen will be visible to others.

💡

When you want to screen share and include audio, make sure to screen share through the Applications option as the Screens option does not support audio

When you click on an application, a popup will appear. Click on Go Live and your shared application will be visible to everyone.

If you want to stop your stream, click on either of the X buttons and your streaming will end (highlighted with red arrows).

How to watch someone's stream

Hover over that user in the voice channel and the Watch Stream option will appear. Click on it, and you will be able to join the stream.

If you want to stop watching the stream, click on the Stop watching icon and you will be able to exit.

💡

A max 50 people can watch the stream concurrently. If there are more than 50 people, one of the people who is watching the stream can re-stream and 50 more people can watch his/her stream.

How to switch on/off video

Click on the Video button in the bottom left and your video opens up. If you wish to switch it off, just click on the same button.

When any person in a voice channel switches on the video, the channel is put to a limit of 25 people by Discord.

Joining a stage channel

Stage channels are similar to webinars or virtual presentations. To join a stage channel, just click on the channel. 

Stage channels are a bit different than voice channels. If you want to speak, you need to click on the Request to speak button. When the stage moderator calls you on stage, then you will be able to speak. If you want to exit, just click on the exit quietly button.

How to do 1:1 voice call or video call

Click on the Discord icon in the top-left. A message screen will appear. 

Left-click on the user you want to call. A direct message screen will open. 

Click on the Start voice call button to do a voice call and Start video call to do a video call.
