Session Title: Using Web3 Social to Disrupt Scientific Publishing
Description: After a short introduction to set the context, we'll spend ~10min contrasting features of web2 social vs web3 social by collaborating on a shared Miro Whiteboard. The whiteboard will start with a grid of post-its, each containing an empty template intended to represent one feature of a social media platform. Participants will be invited to copy a post-it (or multiple), then fill in details about one feature they either like or dislike. Each post-it will have space for a title, description, screenshot, and a pros/cons list. At the end of the brainstorm, we'll spend the next ~10 minutes conducting a "dotmocracy" vote to determine which features we think could disrupt the current paradigm of scientific publishing the most, and discussing why. Anyone can speak at anytime throughout the session, so that ideas can surface and be critiqued by the group as individual people add them to the whiteboard.
Proposed Duration: 20min
My role as facilitator: create the whiteboard, timekeeper, participate in the whiteboard brainstorm, participate in the open-mic discussion
Participant role(s): add features of web2 & web3 social to the whiteboard, discuss pros/cons of micropublication on social media, vote on features with the greatest potential to disrupt the current paradigm of scientific publishing and peer-review
Needs: Miro Starter or equivalent whiteboard software

Session Title: Ecosystem Design for DeSci (Morgan Richards)
Description:
There are a tonne of cool projects popping up in DeSci; from BioDAOs to DePublishing. However, DeSci is on track to repeat the same mistakes as mainstream web3 by being too fragmented and not prioritising the user experience. For mission-driven communities in particular, there are often many tools that, when used in conjunction, could create a holistic and seamless ecosystem for scientific collaboration. It’s currently difficult to incentivise traditional scientists to take the leap into DeSci and when they do, there’s a tonne of friction for onboarding to the weird and wacky workflows that are often totally unfamiliar to their current way of working. This workshop will aim to map out what features and functionalities we need to provide for DeSci to give an easy-to-use all-encompassing scientific ecosystem that can be applied to any vertical and get people using the principles of lean product development.
Format:
- 5-min stage setting (introductory presentation and outline of the workshop)
- 15-min breakout sessions (using Miro boards) where participants will play the role of a hyper-efficient product discovery team
- 10-min summarise and review (group share)
Proposed Duration: 30 Minutes
My Role as Facilitator:
- Setting the context and outlining format
- Mediating discussions (hopping in and out of breakouts)
- Time-keeping
- Miro-board creation and management
Participant Roles:
- User (Scientist, Investor, Student)
- UX Designer
- Product Owner
- Product Developer(s)

Session Title
Prototyping DeSci to Accelerate Cures for Rare Genetic Diseases
Facilitated by Chris Williams
Description
The understanding of biology and genetics have opened up a new frontier of gene therapies that could provide cures to 1000s of debilitating diseases impacting millions of patients around the world. While big Pharma companies focus on more prevalent (profitable) indications, 100s underfunded public and private research institutions are working in silos to develop these cures. Helping researchers to overcome cost and risk barriers can accelerate the development of bespoke therapies for smaller patient groups.
We hypothesize that DeSci concepts and tools could provide platforms for supporting this research on a broad scale. However, the complete absence of DeSci from this space may require a soft introduction followed by rapid adaptation to meet the most pressing needs of the industry. The goal of this session is to identify a Minimum Viable Product that can be prototyped within this space to solve relevant problems and provide immediate value.
Format
Short presentation on the biotechnology ecosystem and types of players involved (Big Pharma, Small Biotechs, Public Research, Patient Advocates, etc.) followed by a whiteboard assisted design thinking session for web2/web3 tools to prototype in this space.

Unconference Session Proposal: The Theory of Peer-to-Peer Scientific Publishing
Session Title: The Theory of Peer-to-Peer Scientific Publishing
Description: Tired of the conferences where the sessions are basically mini advertisements?
Although the application of blockchain to scientific publishing seems obvious to most people familiar with the matter, the problem still remains open. There is no bitcoin whitepaper for scientific publishing yet. No theoretical paper that a scientist could read and, on rational grounds, be convinced of the decentralized consensus algorithm for their own discipline, let alone all of science. There are ideas and partial solutions; however, the overarching solution is missing. Hence, it is too early to advertise a product when the problem has not been solved yet. The Bitcoin white paper was built on ideas from Hash Cash, B-Money, and time stamping and brought them all together in the right form for the first peer-to-peer electronic currency. I propose that we use this unconference session to debate and discuss what the essentials are for blockchain publishing and what the major problems that need solving are. Together, we can think about the design of a blockchain scientific consensus algorithm. As a goal to guide our session, I propose that we define three essential properties of a blockchain for scientific publishing. Come to the session if you are curious about this problem or have ideas to solve it. Even better if you think you have already solved it. Let’s debate! By the way, needless to say, I will also give a short introduction in the begining and then guide the debate.
Format: open-mic discussion
Proposed Duration: 45-60min (depending on the size of the crowd)
My role as facilitator: Set the stage, mediate the debate, participate with my own ideas.
Participant role(s): Share their ideas. Criticize other ideas.
Needs: Only a virtual room and the ability to screen share.

Title: DeSci Takes on Healthcare: Disrupting the Incumbents
Description: We are all well aware that the big pharma industry is bound to be disrupted by the promises of DeSci. My breakout session will focus on several of today’s issues with our current healthcare system and propagate ideas as to how DeSci can disrupt the current state of healthcare/big pharma.
I will present a short introduction of slides (5ish mins) sharing some of the limitations of Big Pharma/healthcare today. Several ideas may include research development focus only being disease states they can profit from, silos of clinical trials, focus on maximizing shareholder value rather than patient outcomes.
Upon diving into several of the short falls of big pharma and healthcare today, I will have a whiteboard session asking the audience to write down how DeSci can help transform and disrupt the current problems I highlighted (Left side of whiteboard will be current issues of big pharma/healthcare I highlighted, right side will be for the audience to write down how DeSci disrupts the existing structure).
Upon completion of my brief walkthrough session, this will be an open discussion and collaborative effort with the full group. Anyone can post on the whiteboard and share their ideas at any time during the whiteboard session as this will be a high-level discussion.
Format: Brief presentation followed by whiteboard group brainstorming session.
